Learn to use the most accurate and reliable equipment and techniques to make a frame for a picture or photo of your choice.
Students will learn where to buy or how to make their own frame stock, how to size the frame for the display piece, cut and assemble the frame, mount the piece in the finished frame, all relevant safety protocols.
Matting and Glass will be discussed but will not be an included activity.
Glass cut to size is available at Ace Service Center for $.06/sq. in.  (11”x14” is ~ $10)

Sharpen an Ax!

Abraham Lincoln famously said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the ax.”

Woodcutters, lovers of the wedge and edge, this three-hour class is for you! Come learn the differences between a felling ax and a splitting ax, and how to shape and sharpen them both according to their intended use. Heck, if you like rabbit holes, we may even explore what makes a good side ax, swamper or limbing ax!

Introduction to Woodworking

This 6 session hands on class will cover basic woodworking techniques and safe operations of commonly used portable and stationary power tools. Students will learn steps of woodworking procedure, cost estimations, planing, jointing, ripping, crosscutting, and dado joint construction. Related topics will include hardware and fastener applications. Students will construct a step stool, plant stand, or similar item.  Project material are in addition to the course fee. Instructors have years of experience as builders and high school woodworking instructors.

Thursday evenings 6:15 – 8:45

Feb. 1st to Mar. 14th   (No class will be held 2/22 due to Winter Break)

Build a Wooden Tool Tote!

Building one’s own tool box is a rite of passage that every woodworker must experience.
Join this six week class to build a proper home for your tools–a classic tool tote.

With only 15 hours of class time at your disposal, you will face the age-old dilemma of the working carpenter:
How to build a tool box, after hours and in-between paying jobs, that will last a lifetime?
Your tote will necessarily need to be easy to build, but you want it to be strong and handsome too!
Join the class to learn how the practical carpenter solves the problem.

Make holiday table decorations and tree ornaments while learning how to safely use a bandsaw, a scroll saw, and a portable jig saw. Students will cut out and assemble one or two projects from among a choice several designs

Session will introduce basic safety, skills, tools and concepts of wood turning on a lathe.  Individuals will each work on a take home project as they practice their intro skills and gain familiarity with wood turning.  Instructor will supply a ready made blank for this first class as well as demonstrate the process of blank production.

Learn to carve a kitchen spoon from green, unseasoned wood using a few simple hand tools. The instructor will demonstrate the process of making a spoon from raw wood to rough blank to finished product and guide you through the process from a prepared blank. This one-day class runs 9:00am – 4:00pm, with a one hour break for lunch (BYOL).

Class fee – $85, Materials fee – $5,  Students must be 18+

Instructor Brendan McGarry has been an artist and naturalist all his life but first discovered spoon carving in 2017 while studying for a Master’s in Environmental Education.  He views spoon carving as a way of connecting to nature and place and has fallen deep into carving spoons and other forms of green woodworking since that introduction. Chest Class

In this class you will build a small storage chest, similar to a blanket chest, using a classic construction method that dates back to the Middle Ages.  It is a versatile technique well worth learning, and adaptable to most any “case constructed” furniture forms including bookcases, bureaus, blanket chests, benches, and many more.  The mixed use of machine tools and hand tools that you will learn to use makes the work fun and fast! Adults 18+

Build a 3-legged stool!  Learn the rudiments of building “staked furniture” using the wet/dry joinery method of construction.

This way of building wooden furniture traces its roots back to the earliest known furniture.  It is a simple and practical building method, adaptable to many forms.  With just a bit of imagination one can use it to make stools, benches and chairs, tables, beds, shelving units and more!

Though an ancient method, your instructor will show you how a mixed use of hand tools and machine tools yields one of the most enjoyable experiences modern woodworking has to offer. Adults 18+
